Dr. Philipp O. Amour is an Associate Professor of International Relations and Middle Eastern Studies.

He received his Ph.D. in Contemporary History from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). Previously, he received his MPhil in Contemporary History and Political Science, and Islamic Studies (University of Bern) from the University of Fribourg.

Between 2011-2012, Dr. Amour spent two years as a postdoctoral Visiting fellow at the Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR), University of Oxford.  His post-doc was financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).  Between 2007–2010, he was a doctoral visiting fellow at the Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies, American University of Beirut, and at Birzeit University in the Palestinian territories.

Dr. Amour’s profile demonstrates a record of teaching and commitment to scholarly research and engagement in the field.

Dr. Philipp Amour taught at the University of Oxford, University of Bern, and Birzeit University. He has been a frequent Visiting Professor at Boğaziçi University since 2013.

Dr. Philipp O. Amour’s research is theoretically driven but empirically rich. His research is situated in the intersection between the fields of International Relations and Middle East Studies and is particularly driven by a focus on Foreign Policy Analysis, Security and Alliance Studies of the Gulf Region and the broader Middle East – encompassing the Arab States, Iran, Israel, Palestine, and Turkey.

His teaching also includes courses on Foreign Policy Analysis, Theories of International Relations, Comparative Politics and International Relations of the broader Middle East, and Contemporary Middle East: Society, Economy, and Politics.

Dr. Amour’s scholarly articles and book chapters have appeared in internationally leading peer-reviewed journals and with highly-regarded presses. He is co-founder of the International Society for Cultural History (ISCH) and was a member of its Committee (2011-2016).
